Freezer Repair in Surrey

We repair the freezer side of your fridge as well as standalone upright and chest freezers in Surrey, South Surrey, White Rock, Langley and Delta. Food starts to thaw soon after a freezer warms up, so it pays to find the cause early.

Freezer faults are a big share of our fridge work. In our records of 5,483 fridge and freezer jobs with fault notes (May 2023 to October 2026), an ice maker or dispenser fault came up in 14.3% of jobs and defrost trouble or frost build-up in 13.6%. One job can have more than one fault. The brand by brand results are in our guide to the most reliable refrigerator brands.

Freezer not freezing

When the freezer is warm but you can hear the compressor running, the cause is usually one of these:

  • Evaporator fan. It moves cold air off the coil into the freezer, and on most frost-free models into the fridge side too. If it stops, the coil stays cold but the compartment warms up.
  • Defrost system. A failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat, sensor or control lets ice build on the coil until air can’t pass through it.
  • Condenser coils or condenser fan. Dust-packed coils or a stopped fan mean the fridge can’t get rid of heat.
  • Door seal. A torn or loose fridge door gasket, or a door that doesn’t close fully, lets warm air in.
  • Sealed system. A refrigerant leak or a failed compressor. This is the bigger repair and less common: it showed up in 7.2% of the same jobs.

Frost and ice build-up

A frost-free freezer should not build up visible frost. Frost on the back wall, ice under the drawers or a frozen drain usually points to a defrost or drain problem. Frost that starts at the edge of the door points to the door seal. Manual defrost chest and upright freezers do collect frost over time and need defrosting by hand, as often as the manual says.

Evaporator coil and defrost heater exposed inside a Fulgor Milano built-in fridge freezer during a sealed system repair
Fulgor Milano built-in fridge freezer, October 2026. The freezer had gone warm while the compressor and fans kept running. Our technician found a refrigerant leak in the tubing, repaired it and recharged the system.

Ice maker not making ice

First check that the water supply valve behind the fridge is open, that the water filter isn’t overdue and that the ice maker is switched on. If all three are fine, the usual causes are a failed water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube or a faulty ice maker module. A freezer that runs warm will also slow ice production, so we check the temperature too.

Upright and chest freezers

Standalone freezers have fewer parts than a fridge freezer, but the same things wear out: door seals, thermostats and temperature controls, and on frost-free uprights the defrost parts. We repair both types in your home.

Before we arrive

  • Check the temperature setting and make sure food isn’t blocking the air vents inside the freezer.
  • Move food you want to keep into a cooler or another freezer.
  • If the back wall is covered in ice, unplug the fridge for about 24 hours with the doors open and towels down. It may cool again for a while, but the ice will come back if a defrost part has failed.
  • Note the brand and model number from the label inside the fridge.

Freezer repair cost

Our diagnostic is $100 for every brand, from Whirlpool, Frigidaire, Samsung, LG and GE to Sub-Zero, Liebherr, Fulgor Milano and Fisher & Paykel. It covers the trip and the time spent finding the fault, and it is credited towards your repair labour. Once we have thoroughly diagnosed your appliance, we quote the parts and labour for the repair. If you decide not to go ahead, you only pay the $100 diagnostic. Sealed system repairs and other specialty repairs are quoted separately after the diagnostic. Repairs carry a 3 month guarantee on parts and labour, with extended guarantee options available. Full details are on our rates page.

Call 778-488-8751 to book a freezer repair. We offer same day and next day visits, 8 AM to 8 PM, Monday to Sunday.

Refrigerator Repair Surrey Frequently Asked Questions

Most kitchen fridges last around 10 to 15 years without any significant issues. However, once the fridge reaches that age, some maintenance is definitely required to keep it alive and working well. Once this maintenance is done, usually, your fridge will run just fine for many more years.

One of the most common repairs that we do is to do with the airflow system in your refrigerator or freezer. Depending on the model and style of fridge, the fans & damper are responsible for a good chunk of the whole cooling functionality and if they’re out of order, you may encounter significant issues. The good news is that they’re usually relatively inexpensive to fix for most brands.

In most cases, if you feel like resetting your fridge helps it start cooling again, you may be dealing with a defrost issue. This is an issue where the automated defrost system in your refrigerator stops working or does not work as well as it should.

However, if it’s a more serious issue like a sealed system problem, there’s nothing you can do to make it magically go away and you’ll need to call in a qualified service professional to help diagnose the root cause and help you repair the issue correctly.

In most cases, if your fridge stops working outright, you should check for power. Open the doors of your fridge and see if the lights come on, whether or not the display is working, and finally, check for the presence of any kind of airflow through the slotted air channels in the back.

In many cases, a power failure in your appliance can knock out the entirety, or a significant part of the major refrigerator systems leading to a sudden no cool event. Most other problems tend to gradually come on over the course of a few days to a few months.

There’s no one particular type of fridge that has a bunch of problems over any other style, type, or brand.

However, it should be noted that if you buy a budget appliance, you’re very likely going to get a unit that’s far less reliable, or “bulletproof” than a more expensive counterpart. As with most appliances, “you get what you pay for” rings true for most household and commercial refrigerators.

Our job records can’t measure lifespan directly, but they do show which brands needed the expensive repairs least. We went through 7,027 fridge and freezer jobs from May 2023 to October 2026. Among brands with 100 or more jobs, Whirlpool had the lowest share of sealed system or compressor work at 3.2%, followed by KitchenAid and Samsung at 3.8% each. A brand with more jobs is not a worse brand, since popular brands simply show up more often. The full results are in what 7,027 of our fridge repairs show.

Usually, top mount refrigerators are built quite a bit simpler than their bottom mount counterparts. This means they are likely going to have less problems in the long run simply due to the lack of extra features or components to fail. However, modern bottom mount fridges are just as efficient, and will usually last just as long as their top mount cousins. If there is any difference, it would be so miniscule that you’re not any better off going with one versus the other.
